If your workplace or program requires an N95 respirator, you need a fit test to confirm the make, model and size that seals properly on your face. Our nurses run the test in clinic and give you a record showing the respirator you passed with.
Who usually needs one
- Nursing, PSW, paramedic, dental and other health science students before placement
- Hospital, long-term care, home care and clinic staff
- Trades and industrial workers whose employer requires a respirator fit test
- Anyone whose previous fit test has expired (many programs ask for a repeat at least every two years)
Before your appointment
- Be clean-shaven where the respirator seals. Stubble or a beard under the seal means we can’t complete the test.
- Don’t eat, drink anything but water, smoke, vape or chew gum for 15 minutes before.
- If your employer or school names a specific respirator, bring it or tell us the make and model when you book.
- Bring the form or requirement list from your workplace or school.
What happens at the visit
A nurse asks a few health screening questions, shows you how to put on and check the respirator, then runs the fit test while you breathe normally, breathe deeply, turn your head, talk and bend. You leave with a record of the make, model and size that passed, and we can complete your school or employer form.
