A TB skin test (also called a Mantoux or TST) checks whether your body has reacted to tuberculosis bacteria. A nurse places a small amount of test fluid just under the skin of your forearm, and you come back 2 to 3 days later so we can read it.

One-step or two-step?

Your school or employer decides which you need. A one-step test is two visits: placement, then a reading 48 to 72 hours later. A two-step test is four visits: the first test and reading, then a second test placed 1 to 4 weeks later, and its reading. Two-step testing is common for health care students and new health care staff.

Plan your visits

  • We book your reading when we place the test, so you leave knowing when to come back.
  • The reading has to happen 48 to 72 hours after placement. Saturday hours help: a test placed on Wednesday or Thursday can be read on Saturday.
  • Start early. A two-step test and any catch-up vaccines can take 4 to 6 weeks to finish.

Tell us before your test if you

  • Have had a positive TB skin test before, or were treated for TB
  • Had a live vaccine (such as MMR, chickenpox or yellow fever) in the last 4 weeks. A TB skin test is given on the same day as a live vaccine or 4 weeks after it.
  • Have a weakened immune system or take medicines that affect it

If your result is positive

A positive TB skin test doesn’t mean you have active tuberculosis. Our Nurse Practitioner reviews your result and history, arranges a chest X-ray when it’s needed (usually covered by OHIP for insured patients), and explains the next steps for your school or employer.

Common questions

When is a TB skin test read?
Between 48 and 72 hours after it is placed. We book the reading when you come in for the test.
How long does a two-step TB test take?
Four visits over about 1 to 4 weeks: the first test and its reading, then a second test placed 1 to 4 weeks later and its reading.
Is the TB skin test covered by OHIP?
No. Testing for school, placement or work is a private service at our clinic: $45 for a one-step test and $90 for a two-step test, reading included.
Can I have my vaccines on the same day?
Live vaccines such as MMR or chickenpox can be given on the same day as a TB skin test. If you had one recently, the skin test is done 4 weeks after the vaccine instead.
